More About Indonesia
what is the demand?
By the end of 2003, it was estimated that there were 143 million orphans in the world (Source: Unicef, Children on the Brink 2004, A Joint Report of New Orphan Estimates and a Framework for Action). AIDS, war & poverty have been identified as the major causes of children being orphaned.
There are an estimated 1.2 billion children (0-17) within Asia of which 87 million are orphans (or 7.3% of all children).
The number of orphans has been slowly, but steadily decreasing over the last 15 years as health care & delivery of this care has improved. Fig. 1 current estimates indicate that orphan numbers in Asia will have decreased to 80 million by 2010.
Fig. 2 orphan numbers in Indonesia have been slowly but steadily decreasing & will have decreased to approximately 5 million by 2010.
INDONESIA has a population of 219 million people (Source: United Nations Population Division). Children 0-17 years of age number 76 million. Of these, 6 million are orphans or approximately 8% of the childhood population.
It should be noted that the projected number of future orphans in Asia & Indonesia assumes that the HIV/AIDS epidemic will not increase significantly by 2010. However, in some Asian countries with large populations (such as China , Indonesia , and Pakistan ), the HIV/AIDS epidemic has only recently begun. If the epidemics in these countries expand to the levels of countries such as Thailand and Cambodia , the number of children orphaned by AIDS could grow dramatically.
